You can have the best product in your category and still be missing from every AI answer for a boring reason: the machine can't read you properly. Before any clever strategy, it's worth checking the plumbing. Here are the six things that most often make a business invisible to AI — and how to check each in a few minutes.
1. Are you blocking the AI crawlers?
Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, and Google-Extended. If any are disallowed, you've told those engines not to look at you. Plenty of sites blocked these in a panic in 2023 and never undid it. If you want to be recommended, they need to be allowed.
2. Do you have structured data?
Schema.org markup (Organization, Product, FAQ, LocalBusiness) is how you hand a machine unambiguous facts instead of hoping it infers them. No schema means the engine is guessing — and guesses get you left out. This is one of the highest-leverage fixes.
3. Is your key content readable without JavaScript?
If your most important facts — what you sell, where, for whom — only appear after scripts run, some crawlers never see them. View your page with JavaScript disabled. If it's blank or hollow, so is the machine's understanding of you.
4. Is there an llms.txt?
A clean llms.txt at your root gives AI systems a curated summary to read first. It won't make you authoritative, but it makes you legible — cheap, fast, worth doing. (We wrote a whole piece on what it does and doesn't do.)
5. Do the facts about you agree with each other?
Your address, name, category, and offering should match across your site, your profiles, and any directories. Contradictions make a model uncertain, and uncertain models stay silent rather than risk a wrong recommendation. Consistency is quiet, unglamorous authority.
6. Does anyone else mention you?
Finally, the big one: AI leans on third-party sources. If no review site, directory, listicle, or community thread mentions you, the machine has only your word to go on — and it rarely recommends on that alone. This is usually the largest gap, and closing it is where real citation lift comes from.
